The frozen lake of Timothy Corbin

Impalpabile e scenografica!

Adelphi Hotel in Melbourne, Australia

Fady Hachem has completed the redesign of the Adelphi Hotel in Melbourne, Australia.

From the interior designers
Over the years, the mixed fortunes of the Adelphi Hotel have been well publicised, from its early ‘overnight’ success to its drawn-out downturn a decade later.

When it was repurchased for the second time in 2013, and Hachem were commissioned with its makeover, the studio recognised the need to develop a bold and creative concept. And, well, we did – establishing the Adelphi as the world’s first dessert-themed hotel. It’s an idea that presented an abundance of possible sub-themes, a visual and experiential feast, you might say. ‘Engage the senses’ became the tag line, which encourages guests to not only relax but to absorb all that surrounds, and give into temptation.

It’s not just about decadence, though. The plans had to work within a modest budget, and the result had to be sustainable in the long-term. The shell of the original Denton Corker Marshall design was retained and all furnishings were either carefully selected or custom-made to layer atop the stark industrial elements, adding warmth, texture and whimsy. Energy and water-efficient amenities were installed, and various simple but important practices have been implemented into the day-to-day running of the hotel, including recycling programs and initiatives that support a variety of local charities.

Constantin Brancusi Homage

Constantin Brancusi, The Newborn II, 1927, Stainless steel, National Museum of Modern Art
Homage! 139 years since the birth of Constantin Brancusi ( February 19, 1876 – March 16, 1957) - patriarch of modern sculpture

“ Don't look for obscure formulas or mystery in my work. It is pure joy that I offer you. Look at my sculptures until you see them. Those closest to God have seen them” Brancusi said.

"Brancusi-Newborn I 1915"
Endless Column

Designed by the famous modern artist Constantin Brancusi, the 98-foot Endless Column and its related sculpture ensemble, including the Table of Silence and Gate of the Kiss, were built as a memorial to those who died defending the town of Târgu-Jiu, Romania from the Germans during World War I. Beginning in 1998, WMF In partnership with the World Bank and the Government of Romania undertook conservation of the deteriorated column and development of a plan to restore the ensemble and integrate the work better with the surrounding landscape. The Endless Column was disassembled, cleaned, restored, and re-erected in December 2000. Attention then turned to the stone sculpture and its environment, which was surveyed and restored as much as possible to its original appearance. Today, the Endless Column, the Gate of the Kiss, and the Table of Silence are recognized as great works of twentieth-century outdoor sculpture.

The Table of Silence

The kiss gate (in Romanian, “Poarta sarutului”) is one of the masterpieces of Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi and resides in the main park of Tirgu-Jiu

Museo Soumaya, Mexico City

Designed by FREE Fernando Romero EnterprisE, Museo Soumaya houses one of the most important art collections in Latin America with over 6,200 artworks and 60,000 square feet of exhibition space.

The Soumaya Museum is located in a former industrial zone dating from the 1940’s which today presents a very high commercial potential. The Soumaya Museum plays a key role in the reconversion of the area: as a preeminent cultural program, it acts as an initiator in the transformation of the urban perception. Its avant-garde morphology and typology define a new paradigm in the history of Mexican and international architecture.

From the outside, the building is an organic and asymmetrical shape that is perceived differently by each visitor, while reflecting the diversity of the collection on the inside. Its heterogeneous collection is housed in a continuous exhibition space spread over six levels, representing approximately 60,000 ft². The building also includes an auditorium for 350 people, library, offices, a restaurant, a gift shop and a multi-purpose gathering lounge.

The shell of the building is constructed with 28 steel curved columns of different diameters, each with its own geometry and shape, offering the visitor a soft non-linear circulation all through the building. Located at each floor level, seven ring beams provide a system that braces the structure and guarantees its stability. The top floor is the most generous space of the museum; its roof is suspended from an impressive cantilever that allows natural daylight to flow in freely. In contrast, the building’s envelope is nearly opaque, offering little and scarce openings to the outside. This gesture can be interpreted as an intention to create a protected shelter for the art collection. The façade is made of hexagonal aluminum modules that optimize the preservation and durability of the entire building.
